Art Basel Plays Hardball with Miami Beach Over Convention Center Rent

Art Basel may be Miami Beach’s biggest cultural draw, but the fair is now haggling over the invoice. Negotiations for a new convention center agreement have turned into a high-stakes debate over rent, public services, and how long the city can count on the event. The artwork may be priceless, but the lease is very much getting a price tag.

Construction Tops Out on 17-Story Grand Hyatt Miami Beach Convention Center Hotel

As detailed by the Miami Herald’s rent report, Art Basel wants a five-year deal beginning in 2026, while Miami Beach is seeking a 10-year commitment. The fair is slated to pay almost $1 million for exclusive use of the Miami Beach Convention Center under the current arrangement and is pushing for significant reductions. City proposals have included base rents of $400,000 to $500,000, with one projection showing roughly $9 million in savings over a decade at a starting rent of $450,000. The city is also offering to cover $300,000 in police and fire costs while asking Art Basel to contribute $100,000 toward transportation expenses.
