Where to Eat This National Sandwich Month

Every August, food lovers across the country tip their hats to one of the most beloved staples in culinary history. National Sandwich Month has been observed since 1952, when industry groups such as the Wheat Flour Institute helped establish the tradition to highlight the convenience and nutritional value of the humble sandwich. But the sandwich’s story stretches far back beyond the 1950s. Ancient Jewish sage Hillel the Elder is said to have wrapped lamb and bitter herbs in matzo during Passover, laying the groundwork for what we now call the sandwich. The modern name, however, comes courtesy of 18th-century English aristocrat John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who reportedly requested meat between two slices of bread so he could keep playing cards without interruption. From Hillel’s Passover plate to Montagu’s gaming table, the sandwich has always been about practicality — and it has only grown more versatile and culturally significant since. Find below some of our favorite spot offerings for National Sandwich Month.
